Up-listing of northern hairy-nosed wombat to critically endangered in QLD
The Wombat Foundation welcomes the announcement by the Department of Environment and Science Queensland of the change in status of the northern hairy-nosed wombat from Endangered to Critically Endangered under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992. This change is to bring it in line with national and international standards and does not in any way reflect a lack of success in the species’ recovery. In fact numbers are steadily increasing, from just 35 individuals in the early 1980s, there are now estimated to be 315 animals across two protected locations.
The northern hairy-nosed wombat is not secure yet though and more work is needed to reduce the risk of them going extinct.The Wombat Foundation is working with the Department of Environment and Science on the recovery program, including the establishment of more colonies to improve the species’ chance at surviving and thriving into the future.
